Vitamin D3 helps in the development and maintenance of bones and teeth, but it also contributes to immune system function. Research shows that the D3 form (cholecalciferol) is significantly more potent and effective than the D2 form (ergocalciferol). Although sunlight exposure results in some vitamin D production, not enough vitamin D is produced, especially with most individuals staying out of the sun or applying sun-block which dramatically reduces production.
